In the context of land-based gambling, the slang term mechanic refers to a casino dealer who is cheating.

There are multiple ways a dealer can cheat. For example, a greased dealer may:

• Hand an accomplice a set of loaded dice during a game of craps;
• Not call a foul when a cheater has more cards they are allowed to have;
• Pretend not to notice that a player is capping.

Catching cheating dealers in one of the functions of a ladderman, pit boss, and other senior casino staff. In most cases, a dealer who is caught cheating will face criminal charges.
