More US States and Territories Move to Legalise Online Gambling

With the recent moves of Iowa towards legalizing online betting and West Virginia passing the bill on legal online gambling, more states join the race.

US States Considering Online Gambling Laws

At the moment, there are two states are considering concrete solutions to legalize online gambling.

Alabama Sports Betting Law

Alabama is now considering the Alabama Sports Wagering Act.

The bill is similar to some of the acts that were already passed in other states, in a way that it would allow online sports betting, mobile betting, but not generally-disapproved betting on college sports.

Also like other states, Alabama would impose 10% tax should the law pass. Only seven licenses would be issued.

Louisiana Sports Gambling

Similarly, another Southern state of Louisiana is entertaining a bill that would legalize online sports betting.

Although the details of the law are not that in-depth, as it does not dwell into taxation, their approach differs from many other states.

Should the bill pass, betting operators would not be able to apply for licenses straight away.

Instead, the local municipalities would be able to organize referendums and see if the population would be okay with seeing online gambling operators on their turf. Only then would the operators be able to move in.

Puerto Rico Moves Closer

Even though it’s not a state, US-controlled territory of Puerto Rico has drafted a proposed bill that would open up far more possibilities than their mainland counterparts.

Not only the bill proposed by the island’s governor Ricardo Roselló would allow sports betting off and online, but it could also potentially allow eSports betting.

This could potentially make Puerto Rico a sought-after legislation haven for both US and international operators.

Apart from some states, however, the Caribbean territory is considering establishing a Gaming Commission that would oversee gambling operations, modify regulations and issue licenses.
