West Virginia Legalizes Online Gambling

Home > Blog > News > West Virginia Legalizes Online Gambling

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice signed the West Virginia Lottery Interactive Wagering Act and now the state has joined Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania in the legalized online gambling club.

This comes as another pleasant addition to the online gambling market in the US after Iowa moved closer to signing a bill on sports betting this week.

Right now, the state’s five land-based gaming licensees offer online poker and casino services to residents.

In a lead-up to passing the bill, the former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder refused to sign a bill that would legalize online gambling in December.

Signing of the West Virginia bill did not go through without their own hurdles, as Governor Jim Justice himself has signed it on the last day of the legislative session. At the same time, Justice vetoed 27 bills on Wednesday, with the bill in question not making the list.

It should be noted that despite the legalization of online gambling in Nevada and Pennsylvania more than a year ago, the former state has yet to legalize online casinos, while the latter one has yet to launch any online gambling operations. This could be a precedent with this bill as well.

Today, the West Virginia Lottery supervises all gaming in the state and is expected to finalize the regulations by June 2020. It means that online games will be available before 2020, while earlier was mentioned in 2021.

In addition to online slots and gamessports betting was approved as well.
