Pot

In card games where players compete against each other, such as Texas Hold’em poker, the pot is a stack of chips containing all of the bets placed during the round. The initial pot is composed of blinds. Later on in the round, players at to it by making their bets. The contents of the pot are awarded to the winner of the round.

How Do Casinos Profit From Pot-Based Games?

As land-based casinos cannot directly profit from the outcome of games like Texas Hold’em, they usually enforce a rake on the pot (similar to a bookmaker’s vigorish). The typical casino pot rake ranges between 2% and 10% of the pot. As pot rakes guarantee profit for the house, hosting pot-based games is very lucrative for casinos.
